On a crisp Wednesday morning, 15 May 2024, movers and shakers from various sectors gathered under the banner of innovation and empowerment, in Athlone, Cape Town.

Led by the capable hands of Mrs Zandile Thapi, the Programme Director of Innovating Africa’s Future’s seminar, the day promised insights, discussions and inspiration.

As the sun kissed the horizon, attendees converged for a hearty breakfast, mingling with anticipation for the day ahead. Among them were SMME & NGO leaders, ready to delve into the intricacies of societal progress.

The stage was set for thought-provoking presentations. Mr. Mthobeli January took the spotlight, weaving tales of innovation and rural development. His words painted a picture of possibility, igniting the imaginations of all present.

Cape Town Deputy Mayor, Alderman Eddie Andrews emphasised the significance of these forums in driving community and economic development.

Ashraf Kariem highlighted the importance of SMMEs in job creation, guiding the audience through the labyrinth of the National Development Plan’s journey.

With each step, they uncovered the essence of progress and the challenges of the last mile.

Khayelitsha Community Trust’s Corporate Service’s Executive, Mrs. Lungelwa Sigasana-Makaula stressed local supplier inclusion in major projects like the Khayelitsha mall.

Airports Company South Africa, Regional General Manager Mark MacLean discussed airport opportunities for community benefit.

Questions flew like arrows in a lively Q&A session, minds intertwining in pursuit of understanding. But the thirst for knowledge was never quenched, as speakers unveiled blueprints for leadership economies and integrated development.

Amidst tea breaks and networking, connections blossomed like wildflowers in spring. Conversations sparked collaborations, laying the groundwork for future endeavours.

After a nourishing lunch, the symposium delved deeper into the realms of change. From unlocking opportunities within infrastructure projects to nurturing youth entrepreneurship, each presentation was a beacon of hope in the landscape of progress.
