The City of Cape Town proudly announced its partnership as the official host city for the finish line of the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge, Africa’s premier solar car competition. The event, which ran from September 13 to 20, returned for its 8th edition and culminated in an exciting finish at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
This partnership was a natural alignment between the Sasol Solar Challenge’s focus on sustainable mobility, innovation, and environmental stewardship, and the City of Cape Town’s long-standing commitment to driving clean energy solutions and pioneering green technology.
Cape Town: A Leader in Clean Energy and Innovation
“The City of Cape Town is a leader in clean energy and alternative technology solutions,” said Alderman Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy. “By driving innovation through proactive facilitation, promotion, and demonstration, we have connected businesses and residents to smart and efficient solutions that address current and future energy challenges. Our partnership with the Sasol Solar Challenge highlighted our shared commitment to sustainable design, efficient energy use, environmental awareness, and innovation.”
The event saw solar-powered vehicles, designed and built by teams of young innovators from around the world, making their way to the finish line in Cape Town. These teams represented the future of green energy solutions, having worked tirelessly to create efficient, solar-powered vehicles that showcased the potential of clean technology.
Celebrating Innovation and Sustainability
“We were excited to welcome these talented teams to Cape Town,” Alderman Limberg continued. “The fact that these young people built the solar-powered cars themselves was an impressive feat that not only underscored their passion and commitment to innovation and sustainability but also to pioneering the future of green energy solutions. As a city, we remain at the forefront of advancing interventions that enable the uptake of renewables, and we envision an energy future where carbon-neutral technologies like solar power play a major role.”
A Shared Commitment to the Future of Energy
The Sasol Solar Challenge promoted the development of sustainable transport and clean energy, offering a platform to demonstrate the latest advances in solar technology. By hosting the finish line, the City of Cape Town reinforced its commitment to supporting innovation in alternative energy, helping to create a carbon-neutral future.
As a global leader in sustainable practices, Cape Town continues to explore and implement innovative ways to reduce the city’s carbon footprint, positioning itself as a key player in the future of renewable energy and green technology.
